Pastor's Corner

19th May, 2024

With this celebration, we conclude the Easter season. The passages chosen as readings for the Liturgy of the Word display many images that help us understand the power of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church. The descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles extended across all nations, and made it possible for the many who were gathered in Jerusalem to understand the Gospel in their own language. The language of faith was communicated to them through the power of the Spirit. The Second Reading and the Gospel describe the fruits of the Spirit among us. Saint John speaks of the Spirit as the consoler and Spirit of truth. In his letter to the Galatians, Saint Paul clearly distinguishes between the works of selfish and conceited hearts from those born out of the Spirit's love.

This distinction is as valid today as it was then for the Galatians. Filled with great Joy, we celebrate the unity and peace that the Spirit brings about among the members of our community, the Church. For this reason, we give thanks to the Lord for those who share the gifts of the Holy Spirit with us, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, our bishops, priests, deacons, lay ministers, volunteers, and those who proclaim the reign of God in our community today. Such an attitude of thanksgiving may find expression in today's liturgy through the choice of liturgical music, the prayers of the faithful, the presentation of the gifts, or perhaps, in the recognition of specific ministries after Mass.
